The top weather story of 2008 has to be the catastrophic impact of Cyclone Nargis on the nation of Myanmar (formerly Burma). Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, January 08, 2009.
Two weather systems in Central Europe will provide wet weather for parts of the region on Thursday. One system will be located over the Mediterranean, and will produce rain and snow over Italy and the Eastern Mediterranean countries during the day. Italy can expect mostly rain from the storm, although the mountains in the northern part of the country could see several inches of snow by the end of the day. The Eastern Mediterranean countries will see more of a mix of rain and snow during the day, with precipitation expected to be light to moderate. Strong winds will also blow through the area.
To the north, the second system in Central Europe will extend across Scandinavia on Thursday. Precipitation from the storm will move over Norway and Sweden and reach Finland by noon or the early afternoon. Light to moderate snow is anticipated for the region during the day, except for the southern portions of Norway and Sweden, along with Denmark, where the snow will change over to rain as the day progresses. High winds are also anticipated for the region on Thursday.
High pressure will keep skies across Western Europe mostly to partly clear on Thursday, although the system over the Mediterranean could produce a few showers across France and Spain.
The front moving through Scandinavia will reach Eastern Europe late in the day on Thursday. The Baltic countries, along with parts of Belarus and northwestern Russia, will see mostly snow during the day, with a little rain mixed in. Winds will increase and become strong during the second part of the day. Farther south, clouds and light snow will move in over Ukraine and western Russia on Thursday.
Four years ago today, Rapid City, S.D. reported a record afternoon high of 76 degrees. What is even more interesting is that Miami, FL reported an afternoon high of only 61 degrees for the same day. Talk about an upside down weather day!
